Access denied. Unable to establish communication between ‘Hyper-V Server’ and ‘Hyper-V Manager’.

This is puzzling since the workstation has been connected to this particular Hyper-V server many times using other network profiles. The profile we created for the Microsoft folks was seemingly giving us the connection issue.

The fix took a bit of searching to find and needed to be accomplished on the Windows Vista system where the Hyper-V Manager was installed:

1. Close the Hyper-V Manager
2. Click Start and type: %windir% [Enter].
   • A Windows Explorer window will open to the Windows directory.
3. Type: dcomcnfg in the Search Windows field at the top right hand of the Explorer window.
   • You will see the following in your search results:
4. Right click on dcomcnfg and Run As Administrator.
   • Authenticate with the local admin credentials if UAC prompts for credentials, or Continue if it does not.
5. Open the Component Services node, then the Computers node, then right click on My Computer and click on Properties.
6. Click on the COM Security tab.
   • You will see the following:
7. Click the Edit Limits button under Access Permissions.
8. Enable Remote Access for Anonymous Logon
   • Before and after shot:
9. Click Apply and OK.
10. Close the Component Services console and the Windows Explorer window.
11. Start the Hyper-V Manager and continue through the UAC.

The virtual machines, if any, will show up in the Hyper-V Manager console after that.

Here’s a high-level step-by-step on how I recommend installing and partitioning your Hyper-V Server 2008 box:

1. Install Hyper-V Server 2008.
   When you’re asked to partition your system, delete all partitions on the disk and create a new 4 – 12GB disk to install Hyper-V Server 2008 onto. The disk really does not need to be any bigger in size.
2. Find the appropriate disk.
   After logging in for the first time choose option 13 in HVConfig.cmd. This will open the command prompt if one isn’t already opened in the background already. Type the following command to list the disks in your system:

   diskpart.exe
   DISKPART> list disk

3. Convert the disk.
   When you only have one disk in your system you would choose to convert disk 0 to a dynamic disk:

   DISKPART> select disk 0
   DISKPART> convert dynamic
   

4. Reboot.
   Reboot your server to convert the disk.
5. Create the volume for the Virtual machines.
   You can now create the volume that spans the unused space on your disk. Use the following commands:

   diskpart.exe
   DISKPART> select disk 0
   DISKPART> create volume simple

6. Find the appropriate volume.
   After you created the volume you need to format it. Find the right volume by typing

   DISKPART> list volume

7. Format the drive and assign a drive letter.
   The last step is to format the volume with NTFS and assign a drive letter. Use the folloing commands:

   DISKPART> select volume 2
   DISKPART> format fs=ntfs label=”Hyper-V Guests”
   DSKPART> assign letter=h
   DISKPART> exit

You will hit this problem when using the Hyper-V Vista management tools connecting to a remote Windows Server 2008 machine with the Hyper-V role enabled, and where both machines are in a workgroup (or in a domain environment where you genuinely don’t have access )

(On Client and Server)

Make sure you are using a username and password which matches between the client and the server

Yes i too had the same RPC issue, when both Hyper-v-server and hyper-v manager was on the same domain, there is no issues at all but once the hyper-v server and client brought to the workgroup environment the issue starts, one of the solution is to edit your hosts file which is under C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc

add the following entry

eg:
192.168.1.68 HYPER-V-SERVER

This would simply sort the issue.

To install the Administration Tools pack by using the Windows interface

Download the Administration Tools package from the Microsoft Web site (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=137379).

Open the folder into which the package downloaded, double-click the package to unpack the files, and then start the Remote Server Administration Tools Setup Wizard.

Note
You must accept the License Terms and Limited Warranty to install Administration Tools.

Complete all the steps that are required by the wizard, and then click Finish to exit the wizard when installation is completed.

Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Programs.

In the Programs and Features area, click Turn Windows features on or off.

If you are prompted by User Account Control to allow the Windows Features dialog box to open, click Continue.

In the Windows Features dialog box, expand Remote Server Administration Tools.

Select the remote management tools that you want to install, and then click OK.

Configure the Start menu to display the Administration Tools shortcut, if it is not already there.

Right-click Start, and then click Properties.

On the Start Menu tab, click Customize.

In the Customize Start Menu dialog box, scroll down to System Administrative Tools, and then select Display on the All Programs menu and the Start menu. Click OK.

Shortcuts for snap-ins installed by Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 7 are added to the Administrative Tools list on the Start menu.
